The Japanese Sea of Japan is a unique ecosystem, almost entirely enclosed by the Japanese archipelago and the Eurasian continent, creating a small ocean-like environment. This isolation has led to distinct ecological patterns, including a recent discovery of dolphins near Japan's coast. The study, conducted by Kyoto University, utilized passive acoustic monitoring to track dolphin activity in two bays: Wakasa Bay and Aso Bay. The findings reveal that dolphins, specifically Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins, appear in these coastal waters approximately once every 10 days. The timing of their presence is influenced by factors such as water temperature and the phase of the moon, with dolphins being more active during the early morning hours and in warmer waters. The study also highlights the importance of squid as a potential food source for these dolphins, as they are known to hunt both fish and squid from night into early morning. The research provides a valuable baseline for conservation efforts, as it demonstrates the effectiveness of passive acoustic monitoring in tracking dolphin activity over extended periods without the need for direct observation.
